6/22/10 Update Jun 22

I have said this many times before…there are bound to be a lot of bad days on this journey to Blaine’s recovery.  Blaine has progressed quite well, but has now reached the stage where he says nasty and inappropriate things to those around him.  He is frustrated, confused, agitated, and cusses like a pirate!!!  Right now he is scoring about a 14 on the Glascow coma scale which is an excellent score for this early in recovery.  He is between a level 5 and level 6 on the Rancho Los Amigos coma scale.  Level 5: Confused, Inappropriate Non-Agitated: Maximal Assistance and Level 6 is Confused, Appropriate: Moderate Assistance.  If you Google either scale, you can get even more information.

His moments of clarity are increasing, but still far apart.  He is eating three meals a day with occasional snacks inbetween.  When he is eating all of his meals consistently, they will remove the peg tube from his stomach.  This is a huge step in his recovery!!

Last night he went through a spell of nastiness, but by the end of the evening he became loving and approachable.  I brought the Binga Dog in to see him again and he held her on his lap, hugged her and kissed her.  He remembered my nickname of Pi all on his own and said that Pi loves him and he loves her.  He was able to recognize us in our wedding pictures and stated that he wants to come home to sleep.

This is a very tough time for all of the family.  Blaine’s inappropriate comments and nastiness are very trying on those around him.  This stage is completely normal for a patient recovering from a brain injury, but so very difficult on the family.  This is especially true of his mom who has never been talked to that way by Blaine before.  This stage will soon pass as his memory awakens.  In the meantime, please keep Blaine’s mom and everyone else in your thoughts and prayers as this is so hard on them.

My love, I know that you are not yourself and if this stage is necessary for you to come back to us, then make the most of it.  Just know that it won’t matter what you say or do, I will not lose faith in you, your strength, or our love.  I will still be right here; your pirate queen, by your side.  I love you unconditionally.

Teresa, I know this has to be so upsetting to all of you but “they” tell us this is the path expected that Blaine will take and hopefully soon over with. We will remember what a kind, loving and caring son, husband, brother he is…this too shall pass. One day he will
read some of what has been written and be appalled, amused, horrified…you name it, he
will never believe it of himself! At least he is talking, feeding himself, being a part of family
times and just a short while ago we were wishing for all of this. Hang in there, this too
will pass! Love to all of you….Grandma and Grandpa.

  2. Teresa,
Stay strong…as Grandma Bernie says, “This too shall pass”. Call if there is anything you need. We have you all in our prayers.
